We leave over 90% of the honey which the bees produce for them as well as feed them corn syrup also pollen patties with pollen, brewers yeast and assorted ingredients because there are no flowers or pollen in the winter. Wild bees such as Africanized migrate from place to place till they find nectar. Our honey bees are a mild Italian breed and if not fed October through January would naturally die. We need them for almond pollination in February. The colony collapse disorder (CCD) could be a foreign virus. Some say old comb, ants, pesticides...If the queen is replaced every year with an excellent well bred queen, the hives pull through the winter just fine. Dad and Lance believe CCD is blown out of proportion and guys are just not giving bees all the attention they need. We don't know what causes it, but we know a lot of factors that might, and when we do everything we know to do right, the bees come out ok. ~ Dinah

Is Carter any relation to Colin and his brother (whose name I shall likely recall sometime this afternoon.....) who made the films Shakey Town and Monstrous Regiment of Women? Same surname, same interest in cinema, fairly strong facial similarities, same state.... perhaps his son? I've been curious since I first became aware of this documentary, which, in itself, is more fascinating, and that on many levels.
Hi Mr. Jesch,
Carter is from VA and film school in New York City, while the Gunn bros are from Edinburgh, Scotland. No relation that we know of, and a different philosophical background as well.
My brothers met Carter & Ross at a beekeeping meeting last Spring. They are very professional and have been a joy to have here.
Thanks for setting the record straight. Interesting similarities, though I can see the differences are also great. I had thought Colin was (perhaps temporarily) situated in the San Francisco area, and guessed that Carter was local as well, what with the frequency of their "location shoots" in your area. I would be very interested in seeing the finished production when available (video/cinema are passions of my own, as well-- been dabbling in it a bit more of late). You all make it abundantly obvious their visits/shooting sessions are very professional, on the one hand, yet very exciting and fun on another. Few people are priviledged to have so much fun whilst "taking care of business" with their work. This combination has been part of my interest in following the sage of capturing the apiculturists.....
Hi Nick!
We enjoy your vocabulary!
