No Way to Sustain Economy Based on Consumer Credit

Peering into the Abyss

by Peter Schiff

...Washington is telling us that our problems result from a lack of consumer spending. Therefore, the solution is for government spending to pick up the slack. However, if Americans are too broke to spend, then how can our government spend for us? The only money they have is taken from us through taxation. To postpone immediate tax hikes (adding interest for good measure), Washington plans to borrow more from abroad. However, if our foreign creditors refuse to pony up, much of the money will simply be printed instead.

Printing money is merely taxation in another form. Rather than robbing citizens of their money, government robs their money of its purchasing power. Many people assume that if government provides the funds we can spend our way back to prosperity. However, it’s not money we lack but production. If the government simply prints money and doles it out, we will not be able to buy more stuff; we will simply pay higher prices. The only way to buy more is to produce more. It is production that creates purchasing power, not the printing press!

Our current predicament resulted in part from our efforts to maintain consumer spending at unsustainable levels, primarily by the reckless extension of consumer credit. Pushing up consumer credit to levels not supported by market realities required government subsidies and guarantees. In addition, Wall Street pitched in with securitization and credit default swaps, which created a false sense of confidence among our creditors that high-risk consumer loans could actually be repaid. However, now that all those gimmicks have blown up, the entire farce has been exposed.

A Post from "The Common Room"

Fellow members of the congregation where we attend were told that their unborn grandchild had no brain. The parents were urged to abort. They were assured there was no brain, and this child would die once born anyway.

They decided that since their doctors' best advice ended with the same heartbreaking scenario no matter what they chose- they were going to be the parents of a dead child- they would prefer to at least have the chance to hold her gently before she left them rather than dismember her, and they continued the pregnancy.

Their baby was born on Sunday. She has a clean bill of health, including a full neurological exam and battery of tests which revealed a healthy, normal baby.

Otto Scott on The Invention of Adolescence

Howard Phillips called Mr. Scott
one of the greatest thinkers of the 21st century.
He was the author of
James I: Fool as King and
Robespeirre; Fool as Revolutionary.
Dad took us to Tuscon in '03 in part to meet Otto, who
Dad said would not be around much longer.
He passed on May 5, 2006.
Otto Scott and R. J. Rushdoony did many "Easy Chair" programs together.
We dug the celler listening to Scott and Rushdoony.
Both wise men, well read and experienced in the world.
Both honor the Lord, but bringing up differing perspectives to the table,
they made sweaty dirty work fun. Otto Scott with Dad, Fama, Lance
at DDP in Arizona 2003
A friend posted Otto's article this afternoon:

Adolescence is now accepted by most Americans as a strange and difficult period marked by wild swings of mood, outbursts of temper, rudeness, rebelliousness, and personality changes — all involuntary.

They would be surprised to learn that this period was unknown, unrecognized, and unseen in every previous civilization, culture, and society throughout the immensely long history of humanity. It is, even today, unknown in large areas of the inhabited world.

A Night Moving Bees From Almonds Into Oranges

Victor, Jodavid and I, Lance, got back around 7 pm from supering bees all day. We stopped by home to eat a bit and hook up the trailer.

Bees drink a lot of water in oranges. One load of bees drink about 50 gallons of water each week, so Jodavid filled the 300 gal tote half full of water.

Jodavid drove the forklift onto the trailer while we ate. I grabbed the liquid smoke. Victor loaded two barrels into the back of the pickup for bee water and from there set them on the trailer pulled by the old white van.
Regina filled our water bottles and we were off.
When we got to the 120 acre almond location, we unstrapped the forklift. Jodavid hopped on and loaded all the supers while Victor and I laughed in amazement.

I said, "You see Jd on the forklift?

He is eleven years old, doing a grown-up man's job."
By the time we got to the road, Dad drove by us all strapped down and ready to go!

Jd loaded the boom trailer and the dodge completely but got tired as he was loading the 18 foot flat trailer, so Victor took over loading the last three pallets and rearranging them. I, strapped them down and pulled the ramps. It was 10 pm and Jodavid was tired and wanting his bed. We should have called Mom to pick him up since we were only three miles from home.
We were off to the oranges, a 40 min. drive. Jodavid was socked out, asleep in the back seat. We were so proud of him.
When we got to the olive tree orchard (owned by an Arab man) near oranges, I parked out by the road. Victor drove the forklift back inside the orchard and unloaded the trailer in the olive rows.
Dad and Jodavid headed for home around midnight.
Victor unstacked the bee hives in the olive rows. We drove over to the hills where we filled buckets and barrels full of water for our thirsty bees to drink and made it home by 2 am.

Matthew 18

15 "Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother.

16 "But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’

17 "And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.

Please note: We are not hauling the church to the man's house. We simply report to the church after confronting him. The parishioners then have responsibility to speak to the man.

Decisionism

is the belief that a person is saved by coming forward, raising his hand, saying a prayer, believing a doctrine, making a lordship commitment, calling out "Oh Lord Jesus," or other external act.

James 2:19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe––and tremble!

Conversion is the work of the Holy Spirit which draws a lost sinner to Jesus Christ for justification and regeneration, and changes the sinner's standing before God from lost to saved, imparting divine life into a depraved soul, giving justification, regeneration and a new direction to the convert.

"Repent, Stop, Turn Around, Restitution," is missing. These do not gain salvation, but surely are evidence of it. Jesus said, "By their fruits, shall you know them." He commands us not to judge according to appearances, but to judge righteous judgment.

~

We have a problem with the sales pitch, the formula. All you have to do is pray this prayer with sincerity.

One sodomite in SF a couple weeks ago asked Dinah, "So I just invite Jesus into my heart, right?"

That's what people tell him.

What did Jesus say?

"Deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Me."

If the sinner's prayer leads to following Jesus, it is going in the right direction. If not, it can lead to a wrong confidence.

God Created Man to be Free

God the self-determined one, has created man in His image, and man's self-government and responsibility under God in Christ is a restoration of liberty and order to a fallen world. Men who truly know themselves to be bought with a price and adopted into the glorious liberty of the sons of God will not become the slaves of men and of the state.

What does one TRILLION dollars look like?

All this talk about "stimulus packages" and "bailouts"...

A billion dollars...

A hundred billion dollars...

Eight hundred billion dollars...

One TRILLION dollars...

What does that look like? I mean, these various numbers are tossed around like so many doggie treats, so I thought I'd take Google Sketchup out for a test drive and try to get a sense of what exactly a trillion dollars looks like.

We'll start with a $100 dollar bill. Currently the largest U.S. denomination in general circulation. Most everyone has seen them, slightly fewer have owned them. Guaranteed to make friends wherever they go.

A packet of one hundred $100 bills is less than 1/2" thick and contains $10,000. Fits in your pocket easily.

Believe it or not, this next little pile is $1 million dollars (100 packets of $10,000). You could stuff that into a grocery bag and walk around with it.

While a measly $1 million looked a little unimpressive,

$100 million is a little more respectable.

It fits neatly on a standard pallet...

And $1 BILLION dollars... now we're really getting somewhere...

Next we'll look at ONE TRILLION dollars. This is that number we've been hearing about so much. What is a trillion dollars? Well, it's a million million. It's a thousand billion. It's a one followed by 12 zeros.

You ready for this?
It's pretty surprising.

Ladies and gentlemen... I give you $1 trillion dollars...

(And notice those pallets are double stacked.)

So the next time you hear someone toss around the phrase "trillion dollars"... that's what they're talking about.

John Baptist called, "Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand."

"A wrong mental image of God can be

as dangerous as a metal image of God."

When a dear Roman Catholic friend passed away, we observed a statue of Mary on a pedestal, with a crown on her head and three children kneeling before her. Across from her was Jesus with a bleeding heart, but NO pedestal, NO crown, and NO worshipers.
A dear lady at the dinner later mentioned that some people accuse Catholics of worshiping Mary, but stated that this is NOT true.
I considered reminding her of the display in the foyer of their church, but held my peace.

The Messianic Character of American Education

Intellectual Schizophrenia ~ The public school is the established church of today and a substitute institution for the medieval church and dedicated to the same monolithic conception of society.
p.314
It is apparent that any religion which frees man from the burden of original sin also frees him from the "burden" of responsibility. Responsible man gives way to man the pawn of environment and heredity. Here the old conflict between pagan philosophers and Christian thinkers, culminating in Augustine's writings, is reproduced. When a man is freed from God and His eternal decree, man does not thereby eliminate the problem of evil. By denying his culpability, man denies his responsibility and therewith his manhood. As a consequence, the pagan philosophers ended by destroying the dignity of man which they sought to establish, whereas Augustine, with his insistence on predestination and original sin, restored responsibility, order and manhood...
But whenever and wherever the doctrine of total depravity (with its analogue, total responsibility) is eroded, or absent, then responsibility, which is essential to social order, devolves upon the state...

Clementine Elizabeth Dagley

Born to David & Susanna (Balyeat) Dagley
"Big Sister" Hadassah is one year older.
Today, we received the birth announcement
"Greetings from the David Dagley Family!..."
"It seemed like she'd been wanting to marry David forever." I said.
They married June, 23 of 2007 He was 20 years old and she 19.
Truly, David can "rejoice with the
wife of his youth". I am so happy to see them doing well.

Am I wasting my life?

Question: Can you give me some advice on how to use my time wisely? I’m doing lots of things, but I’m not feeling very satisfied with any of them. I feel awfully random and that I would like to do more with my life, but there seem to be no opportunities. How do you both determine how to best spend your time, and prioritize?

The Monstrous Regiment of Women film showing

Melody and I are making sauerkraut from two cases of cabbage while listening to Paul Jehle.
Lance and Vic are trying to get in 90 queen bees into hives, while JD does his school work with Mom. And Dinah is planting blackeye peas before some of us head north for a journalism camp. Some of our sisters in Christ plan to show the Monstrous Regiment on Sunday. A "gutsy" documentary, named after a monograph by John Knox, it features an all female cast with heroines like Phyllis Schlafly. Dinah is all geared up for it, with a newspaper quote to share that she received from a Communist Party member in San Francisco.

We happened to sit in front of the Gunn family at SAICFF this year. I didn't realize who they were until I heard Colin's Edinburgh accent. His sweet wife Emily was holding their new baby Patience who lives up to her name.

Home and Sauerkraut Making

Office Work

Moving Dad's old books out of Jodavid's room.

One reason I love California: three heads of cabbage for a dollar!
Melody shredded

Adding ground caraway seed

Pound! Pound! Pound!
1 1/2 banana boxes of cabbage = 28 quart in about 2 hours.

Sauerkraut

makes 1 quart

1 medium cabbage, cored and shredded
1 tablespoon caraway seeds
1tablespoon sea salt
4 tablespoons whey (if not available, use and additional 1 tablespoon salt)

In a bowl, mix cabbage with caraway seeds, sea salt and whey.
Pound with a wooden pounder or a meat hammer for about 10 minutes to release juices. Place in a quart-sized, wide mouth mason jar and press down firmly with a pounder or meat hammer (I use a fork) until juices come to the top of the cabbage.
The top of the cabbage should be at least one inch below the top of the jar.
Cover tightly and keep at room temperature for about 3 days before transferring to cold storage. The sauerkraut may be eaten immediately, but improves with age.
