How to Give a Speech - Dr. George Grant

One of my students asked what steps I go though when I am preparing a lecture or a talk or a sermon or a speech. Obviously, the first thing I have to do is make certain I have something to talk about--I need to master the material, do the reading, wrestle through the ideas, allow the concepts to enlarge in my thinking, consider the various opposing views, and arrive at some Biblical worldview conclusions regarding the subject. Then and only then am I ready to start thinking about constructing a presentation.

But, once that is done, what guidelines do I try to keep in view as I start pulling my thoughts together?

Here is what I told him:

1. Have just one point.

2. Frame that one point with a strong introduction and a well-crafted conclusion.

3. Have a strong outline for everything in-between.

4. Use pithy or funny or poignant quotes—or perhaps peculiar facts that you can then hang each of your points upon.

5. Just be yourself--don't try to inject or project some other persona.

6. Don't read the talk--but don't memorize it either.

7. Have fun.

"A lecture should proceed apace from knowledge to understanding to wisdom--offering insights, delights, and always some element of surprise. Oh yes, and its passion should be outdone only by its brevity." Arthur Quiller-Couch

Mother’s Milk: Ideal Nutrition for Human Babies

Protein is a prime example of how human milk is unique nutrition for human babies. Human milk is low in protein, at least when compared with the milk of other species, especially cow's milk. This isn't a nutritional deficiency; there are good reasons for this. Human infants are designed to grow slowly. While it's important for humans to develop strong bodies, even more important is brain development and the learning of social skills. The experiences that shape the brain come from close contact between mother and baby when baby is held and carried. If human infants doubled their birth weight in less than 50 days the way baby calves do, and then continued growing, how could their mothers carry them and talk to them and keep them close? Baby cows need to learn where to find the best grass in the meadow; baby humans need to learn how to work with others so that everyone's needs get met.

Let All Things Now Living ~ Song of Thanksgiving

object width="425" height="344">

Ash Grove, Traditional Welsh Melody
Lyrics by Katherine K Davis

Let all things now living
A song of thanksgiving
To God the creator triumphantly raise.
Who fashioned and made us,
Protected and stayed us,
Who still guides us on
To the end of our days.
His banners are o'er us,
His light goes before us,
A pillar of fire shining forth in the night.
Till shadows have vanished
And darkness is banished
As forward we travel
From light into light.

His law he enforces,
The stars in their courses
And sun in its orbit obediently shine;
The hills and the mountains,
The rivers and fountains,
The deeps of the ocean
Proclaim Him divine.
We too should be voicing
Our love and rejoicing;
With glad adoration a Song let us raise
Till all things now living
Unite in thanksgiving:
"To God in the highest,
Hosanna and praise!"

The man we're looking for

won't be obsessed with us; he'll be "obsessed" with the Lord. And his love for us will pale in comparison to his love for the Lord and the things of the Lord. If he's the right man, he will be careful with our heart … And our guiding focus won't be a hedonistic passion for one another --but an all-consuming passion for Christ. Our life's focus won't be on each other -though I know we'll love each other dearly -it will be on kingdom work.

Sovereignty

The source of law in any society gives us the god or sovereign of that society…Where and when the churches fail in their task, no constitution and no law can prevent the destruction of freedom and order… God defines Himself in these words: “I am the LORD, I change not” (Mal. 3:6). The state also says it is our lord or sovereign, but a constantly changing one…If the triune God is alone Lord or Sovereign, then all concerns are religious and public. -R. J. Rushdoony

Emotional Pornography

“Why should an unreal female be exciting, and a far better and real woman not be so? The key is the essence of imagination: the fantasy woman is totally the creation and creature of man, whereas the real woman is God’s creation and creature. It is essential to imagination to create a man-made world and a man-ordained decree of predestination. It is the essence of sin to demand such a world.” R.J. Rushdoony

What is emotional porn and how do we protect our young people?

R.J. Rushdoony points out, “Because ours is an age with a will to fiction, the role of imagination is extremely important. Men who will not be governed by God’s word will not be governed by reality, because reality is not of their making. God having created all things, reality reflects the mind of God, not man. Hence, it is the essence of sin to resort to imagination to escape God’s law world.”

Here is the ultimate question for those of us who delight in being titillated by unbiblical violence, unbiblical death, unbiblical spiritualism, and unbiblical romance – even when it’s “just pretend”: Are we are of the spirit, or still of the flesh?

Pornography is not simply about pictures. At its core, pornography starts with,

1. A desire to use people as self-gratification machines, and

2. A preference for man-made reality and man-made people over the real thing. These hold as much temptation for women as for men, though romance novels often ...

I Cor. 11 Headcoverings

You'll know when we have reformation

when the women wear headcoverings to church.

Audit the Fed Attached as an Amendment

“I was pleased last week when we won a vote in the Financial Services Committee to include language from the Audit the Fed bill HR1207 in the upcoming financial regulatory reform bill. As it stands now, if HR 3996 passes, because of this action, the Federal Reserve’s entire balance sheet will be opened up to a GAO audit. We will at last have a chance to find out what happened to the trillions of dollars the Fed has been giving out…”

Father RUNS to his Prodigal Son

Man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart. I Samuel 16:7b

“God Looketh on the Heart”

A certain young man once sent a young lady a letter to ask if he could court her. The lady replied in the negative. A few days later, however, the young lady approached the young man and asked him if she had hurt him by her reply...

"There is no hope for the future of America

until the hearts in the homes of America

recognize Jesus as King of kings and Lord of lords,

individually and nationally." Becky Morecraft

“There is a time to be born and a time to die…

a time to embrace and a time to

refrain from embracing.” from Ecclesiastes 3

These times are not in our hands.

A man’s sin does not mean he should have died earlier,

though it is easy to feel that way.

His sin does not move God off His throne.

Lord willing, it will show others the cost of sin

and make them hate it all the more.

Power Struggle

The French kicked out the Huguenots.

A hundred years later,

during the French Revolution,

the most faithful Catholics were slaughtered.

Those people

whom the Communist Bolsheviks persecuted,

tortured, confined in the gulags,

committed to the insane asylums

were the very people that were blessing society.

Small Beginnings

Dad: Hey guys, I think those trees need water back there.
Victor: Those trees aren't on life support.
Dinah: Don't despise the day of stunted trees.
I guess you guys pulled the plug on them a long time ago.
Victor: The good part is they don't feel any pain.

The Homespun Dress

Charlie Zahm sings Dixie at the Jamestown 400

Dixie as only Charlie can sing it.

Collision

It is wonderful to see a powerful defense of partial-preterism. I loved the emphasis on Jesus as a true prophet when He came back in judgment against Jerusalem raising armies to destroy the temple and Jerusalem fulfilling Christ's words to the letter. Doug Wilson shocked the God-hater, Christopher Hitchens, as the Bible commands us to answer a fool according to his folly lest he be wise in his own eyes. ~Lance

Creation

Isn’t this evidence from scripture that God created the earth in six literal days? He asks us to do the same: to work six days and rest one. Genesis 1 and Exodus 20:11 use the same word for day, “yom.” ~Lance

This is a 24 hour period. We are not always faithful about taking off work, yet we agree with Rushdoony that in stopping work we recognize that everything is from God. It does not all depend on us.

Questions Regarding the Fort Hood Massacre:

1) Why were the soldiers not armed?
2) If the federal government--including the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense could not protect US soldiers on one of the most tightly secured and heavily guarded military installations in America, how can anyone in...the country possibly not break out in cacophonous laughter when politicians tell us we need to surrender more liberties so that they might pass more laws to protect us crummy little peons?
3) How could one man armed with only two handguns fire over 100 rounds (demanding he reload at least 3 times) into a crowd of scores and hundreds of fearless combat-trained warriors?

This is wonderful seeing Eric Hovind debate an evolutionist at American River College. Thank you, Eric, for speaking at ARC and at Kaweah. You are a great blessing. We think God will give more time to take dominion here.

Former President

President George W. Bush did not introduce, lobby for, nor sign any law that acknowledged the right to life and so could stop the killing of even a single child. Instead he had an enormous pro-abortion influence, e.g., giving Planned Parenthood hundreds of millions of dollars more than did even Bill Clinton.

Andrew Peterson - Holy is the Lord

Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love,

and go to the region of Moriah.

Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering

on one of the mountains.” Gen. 22:2

Those who sow in tears
Shall reap in joy.
He who continually goes forth weeping,
Bearing seed for sowing,
Shall doubtless come again with rejoicing,
Bringing his sheaves with him.
Psalm 126:5-6
My picture of this verse is of people carrying precious seed, needed for food, to plant.
They risk starvation if they give them up, but face certian starvation if they do not.
We have a choice: to weep when we plant or when we reap.
Either we sow with great effort and sacrifice and Lord willing, reap with joy,
or sow with laziness on our emotions and reap that harvest.

"Forgiveness

in the Bible is always conditional upon true repentance. Unconditional forgiveness is simply the total, unconditional toleration of and acceptance of evil. It demands that we accept the criminal, the pervert, the degenerate, the subversive as they are. " ~R. J. Rushdoony

Plantain - The Wedding Saver

by Shoshanna Easling of Shoshanna Gardens.com

It was Friday on a very beautiful day. The sun shone with a special delight on the black-eyed daisies, and the light breeze blew them very softly in the wind. They were dancing our wedding tune!

That very morning I had gone out with James’ parents and picked about 300 black-eyed daisies along with many other wildflowers. It was now afternoon, the day before our wedding. You can imagine how I was feeling excitement beyond my wildest imagination! James and I were in our Jetta, driving over to Gabe’s house. We had the sunroof open as we talked about last minute plans. In a burst of joy, I stood up through the sunroof yelling like a wild Indian. I felt like a girl in a fairy tale. Everything was so perfec….ooow, ouch! I grabbed at my eye as it started to throb and swell shut. The pain was really intense...

Common antibiotics tied to birth defects

Study: Drugs to treat urinary infections could cause heart, brain problems
updated 1:06 p.m. PT, Mon., Nov . 2, 2009

CHICAGO - Researchers studying antibiotics in pregnancy have found a surprising link between common drugs used to treat urinary infections with birth defects. Reassuringly, the most-used antibiotics in early pregnancy — penicillins — appear to be the safest.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33588427/ns/health-pregnancy/

This article reminded me of when someone close to us had a bladder infection while pregnant. She used raw garlic and recovered. (For a infection like that I would use 5-10 cloves at a time.) She was dizzy and sick, I think with a flu, but with plenty of water, the garlic and rest she got better. While antibiotics are useful and lifesaving in the right context, it's helpful to know a remedy that is close by, inexpensive and safe, especially for pregnancy and breast-feeding.
