"Back in 1999 and 2000, I worked in the security department for Qwest Telecommunications, a telephone service provider for 14 states.

Our department's main responsibility was to answer queries from law enforcement agencies nationwide, whether they were local police, sheriff's departments, state police, or FBI, the coroner or other agencies.

Each of these agencies would fax us either a subpoena or a court order demanding phone records for customers. This might be a phone bill or a detailed call record for a certain period of time. We never fulfilled these requests unless it was an official court document! Unless it was from the IRS! The IRS had their own form they sent in that demanded records and our department was required to comply. These documents they sent us were their own documents and were not verified in any way by an outside court of law!
