Is the Name “Easter” of Pagan Origin?

Contrary to suggesting a connection to a Saxon goddess, some have suggested Easter finds its root in the German word for resurrection—auferstehung. In a footnote to his translation of the work of Eusebius, Christian F. Cruse defended the usage of the word Easter:

Our English word Passover, happily, in sound and sense, almost corresponds to the Hebrew [pesach], of which is a translation. Exod. Xii. 27. The Greek pascha, formed from the Hebrew, is the name of the Jewish festival, applied invariably in the primitive church to designate the festival of the Lord’s resurrection, which took place at the time of the passover. Our word Easter is of Saxon origin, and of precisely the same import with its German cognate Ostern. The latter is derived from the old Teutonic form of auferstehn, Auferstehung, i. e. resurrection. The name Easter is undoubtedly preferable to pascha or passover, but the latter was the primitive name.”

Is the date of Easter Christian?

"It appears clear from the earliest writings of the church fathers that the Resurrection was almost universally celebrated by the church...Polycarp understood from the Apostle John that the celebration was to be observed from the date of Nisan 14, while the tradition of the Western Church was to celebrate on the Sunday following the Passover."

Mercy's Baptism on Easter Sunday

Baptism is a sign of the covenant,
as circumcision was in the Old Testament.

Cardboard Testimonies of changed lives.
One side shares their heartbreak
the other shows the power of God

This stained glass
has been a witness and a meditation to me
throughout my life
When Mom's church built their new building
they brought the beautiful stained glass windows with them.

If you click on the photo above to enlarge it
you may see there are hundreds of nails in each cross.
Alic explained that at one service
people wrote their prayer request
on a paper and nailed it to the cross.
I lay my heavy burden at the cross too.

I snapped this one

and Regina took this picture.
We found a shady spot that looked perfect for a family photo.

The Wonderful Cross

Thank you James McDonald for sharing this with us!

Which voice will we follow this Resurrection Day?

The Crowd or the Cross?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZsaLHz1G5s

Listen, you hear two voices:

Which is louder to you?

The Crowd says, "Follow us."

The Cross says, "Follow me."

The Crowd, "Rely on yourself."

The Cross, "Rely on Me."

The Crowd, "Earn your worth."

The Cross, "I am your worth."

The Crowd, "Bear your burdens."

The Cross, "Nail them to Me."

"Because of the cross my interest in

the crowd died long ago." Apostle Paul

The Cross says, "Be Holy."

The crowd says, "Be Happy!"

The Cross says, "For Love's sake endure it."

The Crowd says, "Honor yourself."

The Cross says, "Humble yourself"

The Crowd says, "Do."

The Cross says, "Done."

Easter Sunday

Let nothing be done out of selfish ambition, or vain conceit.

But in lowliness of mind, let each esteem others as better than himself.

Rom. 12

Create in me a clean heart, Oh God,

And renew a right spirit within me.

Cast me not away from your presence, Oh Lord,

And take not thy Holy Spirit from me.

Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation

And renew a right spirit within me

Melody, Regina, Esther, Dinah & April

Oh Lord, our Lord, How majestic is your name in all the earth!

Blessed is the man, who fears the Lord,

Who delights greatly in his commandments…

His descendants will be mighty on the earth.
The generation of the upright will be blessed.

Pastor Campbell preached on Luke 24: Rome could not hold back the Resurrection.

The Jews came to Pilate saying, "Now that deceiver said that he would die and rise again on the third day. His disciples will steal away the body and say He has risen from the dead. Now the last deception will be worse than the first."

Pilate told them, "You have a guard, go and make it as secure as you know how." The Jews set a guard of 16 men, setting a Roman seal on the mouth of the tomb.

The third day an Angel came, rolled back the stone breaking the seal. Jesus the Christ rose from the dead. The guards “shook and became like dead men.” The penalty for breaking a Roman seal is death, and only a person designated by Rome could legally break the seal.

Who appointed the angel? God did. He commands kings to “Kiss the Son.” Psalm 2 And he laughs at their plots to break His law.

Render to Caesar the things which are Caesar’s and to God the things which are God’s. God “broke” man’s law. Man proposes God disposes.
