Our Godly Legacy

Some say our nation was founded by deists and masons. That is the excuse for some not to get involved in government policy. But as we uncover the treasure chest of history laid out in John Eidsmoe's thrilling book, "Christianity and the Constitution." Of the 52 of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence, testified that they believed in the trinity belonged to godly churches. ~ Lance

These "deists," other than Thomas Jefferson, were raised in staunch Calvinists homes. As Ben Franklin stated, "God governs in the affairs of men. Deists do not believe that.

All three went to seminary. One was licensed to preach in a Presbyterian church and conducted services there. It is highly questionable that he was a deist. In many states, at the time of the Constitutional Convention, were not allowed to hold office.

History is the work of God. To not know history, is to NOT know what God has done. Psalm 78 commands us to teach our children our history, so that we will have our hope in God and NOT forget His works. We cannot rely on unbelievers for our history. Rushdoony tells us, “They cannot give a meaning to history which they themselves lack, nor can they honor a past which edits them for their present failures.” We as Christians are commanded to reclaim history because as Robert E. Lee said, “it is history that teaches us to hope.” ~Lance

I recently read a most amazing book, originally published in 1848, called the Lives of the Signers of the Declaration of Indepencence (republished by Wallbuilders). Absolutely amazing book. And free of the present bias resulting in the redacting of our history. Two to perhaps five pages on each man, and yes, every one of them has a faith in a Sovereign God, though a very few (the number four you mention seems about right) had some strange understandings of Him. Now, if THIS sort of history were taught in our government schools, how different would this nation and culture be in one generation? True enough, understanding our history gains a deeper understanding of the God of that history. No, HE is not finished yet with His part in the story of man and Himself.
